Our Motto

We're not saying we ought to misbehave...

but we should look as though we could!

The Beginning

Our Red Hat Society Chapter was founded by Roberta Lightner of Duncannon, PA.  The meaning behind "Fifty Niner" is because most of the ladies in our group graduated high school together in the class of 59.  The "& More" is just to include the ladies that did not graduate in 59 but are just as special in our group of "First Class Red Hats".

"I first wanted to become a member of a Red Hat group about 2 years ago (2003) when my husband Ray and I were vacationing in Hannibal, MO.  I wandered into a little gift shop that had the most beautiful red hats!  There was a customer there who was buying ALL the red hat stuff she could get her hands on and when I approached her about it she told me all about her Red Hat Society group.  Well, before I knew what hit me, there I was buying a red hat.  I proudly put it on my head and went to meet my hubby.  He was patiently waiting for me outside and when he saw me in my new Red Hat he just shook his head and said "What is that for?!"

Well, I was hooked, I wanted to be a Red Hat Gal!  Unfortunately at the time I was working and really had no free time, and I did not know where to go to join a group.  So a couple of years past and then came that big day, I RETIRED!  Now I wasn't busy anymore and couldn't wait to be a Red Hatter!  I started looking for a red hat group to join. The one in my little town was not accepting new members.  I was sure if I was going to miss out on being a Red Hat Gal.  A short time later I started researching on the internet for information on the Red Hat Society and then my hopes lifted.   I decided I would just start my own group!  I called some of the gals that I graduated with and they were all for it!  So here it is my dream!!!  I am a Queen!!!  Queen of my own First Class "Fifty-Niner" Red Hats & More Chapter!  So named after our Graduating class of 1959 and the "More" is for all the other special gals that will also be a part of our special little Red Hat Society Chapter!" - Roberta Lighter, Queen of the "Fifty Niners"
